B.C. is moving towards a future where passenger vehicles create zero emissions and commercial transportation is significantly cleaner. The province is introducing ambitious targets for light-duty vehicles and setting new targets for a faster move to electric medium- and heavy-duty vehicles. BUILDING B.C.’S EV INFRASTRUCTURE
To support this growing EV fleet, B.C. is building a robust EV infrastructure. And that starts with training technicians in regions across B.C. In 2019, B.C. launched the first pilot program for EV Maintenance Training at BCIT. In 2021, three new training centres were added at Camosun College, Okanagan College and the College of New Caledonia, expanding the number of training opportunities for EV technicians and reaching more B.C. communities. In 2022, the reach of the program was further extended to include: College of the Rockies, Kwantlen Polytechnic University and Vancouver Island University. Each institution is offering an EV Maintenance Training program to Red Seal automotive technicians. The program provides them with the training they need to work in this growing sector and help in the fight against climate change.
EV MAINTENANCE TRAINING PROGRAM
The EV Maintenance Training program course is designed to provide Red Seal automotive technicians with the skills to diagnose and repair zero-emission vehicles. With the growing number of light-duty EV’s registered in B.C., there is a big demand for a skilled EV workforce.
B.C.’s new EV Maintenance Training Program is available to Red Seal Automotive Service Technicians as a part-time (36 hour) course. The course is designed to give graduates a broad understanding of EV maintenance including:
- Apply high voltage safety procedures
- Distinguish different categories of high voltage vehicles
- Service High Voltage Powertrain Systems
- Service high voltage battery charging systems
- Compare high voltage vehicle transmission type
- Service high voltage vehicle temperature management systems
- Distinguish the maintenance procedures for high voltage vehicles
- Associate causes for common symptoms found in current high voltage vehicles
